Deschutes Fly Fishing Report May 21, 2017

It’s been a weird kind of year.  High flows and cold fronts have definitely affected the Salmonfly/Stonefly hatch.  The giant bugs are present in all stretches of the river. Although the bug presence is heavy and they’ve been there for two weeks now, the fish are not keyed on them in most spots, that should change in the next day or two.  In the late afternoon the bugs are flying and dropping eggs into the river.  The afternoon bug activity includes a large PED hatch as well as some good caddis hatches as well but again the fish are not looking up yet.  All that said we have found some nice fishing between the crowds.  The multi day stretch has been busy but the best fishing is gonna be between Whitehorse and Dant, at least that’s what I’m seeing.  By next week fishing should be pretty good everywhere assuming we don’t get another cold front.

I have a window of availability between now and Memorial weekend, I expect the stoneflies to be around in good numbers into June.  Let me know if I can take you fishing.
